Acne Laser Treatment

Acne is a serious skin condition that almost all of us have experienced – most commonly as teens when skin is oily and affected by hormonal changes.  Although the majority of people outgrow the condition, some adults continue to be plagued with acne.  This can hurt self esteem and confidence and should be addressed by a skin specialist who may recommend acne laser treatment.

Women tend to have irregular acne due to the hormonal factor related to the menstrual cycle and other hormonal changes that women are prone to.   Men are more likely to suffer long lasting and more severe acne.

Acne is caused by a blocked hair follicle.  The blockage leads to a growth of bacteria under the skin layer which eventually leads to an outbreak.

For mild acne cases, treatment is usually from topical and internal medications. These products are designed to break up the blockage and opens up the pore which enables the acne to clear up.

Severe acne conditions are usually treatable with acne laser treatment. For recurring and hard to treat cases of acne, laser removal can be used to remove one of the major causes of persistent acne.  This is done by shrinking the sebaceous glands.  This in turn reduces the quantity of sebum and this helps to reduce the number of acne outbreaks the patient will experience in the future.

Acne Laser Treatment – Beginning the Process

A dermatologist should be your first stop to pursuing acne laser treatment.  Using lasers, the dermatologist will be able to precisely target the acne scarred tissue and remove it while also heating up the second layer.  The heat from the laser stimulates your skin tissue to produce new collagen which makes the skin look younger and healthier.

The sessions can last a matter of minutes but usually multiple sessions are needed and these will be spread out over the future months. The final price for acne laser treatment will be dependent on your individual case.  Your dermatologist should be able to give you an estimate of how much the total acne laser treatment will cost and how many weeks or months you can expect to making appointments.

There are two different types of lasers used to treat severe acne.

The Diode laser has the best reputation for acne laser treatments. A larger number of patients have benefited from treatments with the Diode laser.

The other type is pulsed dye laser and some patients respond well to this laser.

A topical ointment is applied to help diminish any discomfort during the process.  After treatment, you can expect some redness accompanied by some swelling.  These symptoms don’t take very long to disappear.

Acne laser treatment is more effective than any other method currently available. Acne laser treatment has proven to be more successful than prescription topical treatments and doesn’t carry the side effects associated with antibiotic therapy.
